What's under this stoneAccountability journalism, source-first

Tip-offs.

Encrypted tip-offs are welcomed. Source confidentiality is the only commitment that matters on an accountability publication, and it is the one this page makes.

Why anonymous tip-offs are welcomed

Most public-interest documents reach publication because someone with access to them decided that publication served a purpose larger than their employment. The journalism this publication exists to do is not possible without those decisions. Tip-offs are read by one person. They are not stored on a third-party platform. Source identity is not a fact that needs to leave the encrypted inbox to make the work happen.

A tip-off does not have to be a document. A pointer to a paragraph in a 400-page audit, a question on notice that nobody followed up, a number in a financial statement that does not reconcile with another number in the same statement, all of these are useful. Brevity is welcome. So is verbosity, when the detail is necessary.

What not to send

Do not send documents you do not have lawful permission to share. The publication will not knowingly receive material whose disclosure would expose the sender to a clear and avoidable legal risk. If you are unsure, write first without attachments and describe what you have. The reply will be a direction, not a request for the file.

Do not send personal data about uninvolved third parties. Do not send material whose only public-interest value is embarrassment of an individual. The publication does not run kompromat. Stories are about institutions, statutes, and the figures that move through them. Individuals appear when their public roles place them inside that frame, not otherwise.

Do not send unsolicited press releases, marketing pitches, paid-placement offers, or "exclusive" PR-led narratives. These are deleted unread.

Reply timing and confidentiality

Reply timing is not guaranteed. Tip-offs are read in batches. A reply may take a week or longer. Source confidentiality is guaranteed. No source has been or will be identified to a third party, including to a court, without the source's prior written consent. The publication will defend that position to whatever extent is required.
